Disabled Theater
Once again Jérôme Bel works with non-dancers to explore issues that go beyond representation. In Disabled Theater, he works with mentally disabled actors from Austrian company Theater HORA, to investigate the dynamics of exclusion that lead to the marginalization of those considered unable to produce. Performers expose themselves without hiding their condition; in a harsh and raw way that mimics the reality they live in, proving that they do have the ability to question the actual mechanism of representation itself. In times of a worldwide fight for wider social inclusion, Disabled Theater is an important step towards the democratization of dance.
Jérôme Bel, whose works are famous for their provocative tone and approach to contemporary issues, lives in Paris and travels the world with his work. He graduated from the Centre National de Danse Contemporaine d’Angers (França) and his last performance at Panorama was in 2011, with the solo Cédric Andrieux.
Theater HORA was created in Zurich in 1993 by education specialist Michael Elber using art to aid those with learning disabilities. At HORA they can develop and show their professional abilities to large audiences. Theater HORA has staged more than 50 scenic arts productions and since 1998 the company works with guest directors and choreographers.
